Artist Statement:

I create art because I seek fulfillment in life, and I have a need to express my ideas and tell my visual story.  When I am working I am energized by the opportunity to set my sense of site on a page for others to view.  I love the smell of oil and the feel of buttery paint gliding over the canvas.   I love the unexplained challenge of expressing my ideas simply and bold.  I do what is an illusion of mastery to seek the truth about life.

I prepare my own materials.  I like to be involved in the entire process.  I build stretcher bars and I stretch and prime my own canvas.  When the piece is completed I select and build the frame.  I mix special mediums to make my oil paints buttery and free.  I work wet into wet paint.  I use photographs; I have taken, for reference and I draw on the canvas using a large brush so I can sculpt the shape and line.  I work to produce a series of painting like chapters in a book to complete an idea.

Recently I traveled to the Jersey coast and walked along the beach and the board walks.  I was overwhelmed by the masses of people and the uninhibited behavior they expressed during their leisure time.  The bizarre costumes they wore and their self-indulgent activities deeply resonated with the fiber of my work.  Inspired and invigorated by a renewed sense of curiosity and awed by a community at play, I am now painting richly expressive people and their holiday places.  I am exploring many new human expressions, shapes and colors.  Once completed the images will combine to form a new look at the human experience.
