Artist Statement:

I am currently working on two bodies of work; the figure and the landscape.

Specifically the human figure as figurations of form in space and landscapes built abstractly up, down and away from the horizon line.

I began creating my Figurations Series, because I was interested in knowing what space looks like in relation to the human form.  I wanted each piece of work to be expressive of the figure that I work to embody in mood and character.  The space that the figure form holds is also remarkable to me in how it expressively carries its weight of emotions and feeling in its simple gesture lines.  In addition, the drawings that are then moved into paintings have the weight of color working together and with the figure.  The use of color is very important to me in how the work is carried through to the final stage.  Colors work together to reveal new unique shapes of space and also help hold and support the figure in its new environment, the painting itself.

In 2007, I began working on my newer, Landscape Abstractions Series, moving from how the figure interacts with its surrounding space, to a more intentional void of human presence.  This was very simply based on the idea of how the interaction of the earth and sky is literally through the horizon line.  The work takes on a geometric, grid-like nature as the physical space of the piece collides from all directions.

When I work, I always try to empty myself onto the paper or canvas-void of my ego- where there is play.  This play is a constant back and forth dialogue between the feelings that I experience towards my subject and the marks that I put down.  To me every mark made is visible residue of my observations towards the object being described.  Each mark in turn affects the final outcome in some way-for better or for worse.  One painting or drawing may be reworked many times until it is fully realized to me.

With these two bodies of work, I am working quickly to either capture fleeting movements of relational body stances or real moments of space in nature.  I am motivated to find and capture that profound truth of reality which may be subtly disguised and confidently exposed through the use of line and color.  Literal description is secondary to my natural impulse to see the casual and immediate beauty in these landscapes and figurative pieces.
