Artist Statement:

My paintings create a dialogue about Asian ideals of beauty and femininity. In particular they call into question the notion of beauty in different cultures. My works are often shaped by the cultural dichotomy between Asian and American culture. I drew inspiration from my diverse Hakka Chinese and Japanese ancestries as I trace the definition of Asian femininity. I seek to bring awareness to various Asian beauty stereotypes and attempt to reconcile Asian ideals with contemporary ideals of beauty and femininity.

The Lotus Foot series were inspired by the memory of my late Hakka grandmother, who passed recently at the age of 104. Hakka women refused to bind their feet, a practice considered erotic but excruciatingly painful. In “A Perfect Match”, I use the color red to compare and contrast the refined, erotic daintiness of lotus shoes with the gruesome, bloody image of a severed pig’s foot. The pig’s foot bears an uncanny resemblance to the end result of the foot binding process, in which one’s feet are purposely broken and folded inwards in the most unnatural way. To me this seems to be an act of reverse evolution.
