Artist Statement:

My drawings act as explorations of our environment as an organized space. The development of street systems and mapping has lead to a sense of landscape that is easy to navigate in terms of space and time, in multiple points of view and in varying levels of on-demand complexity. This process of developing control over space is one of constant maintenance and revision, resulting (perhaps not ultimately) in a living structural system.

The layering process used in my works on paper serves as a method of exploring spatial development. In addition to building up lines of ink or paint, I use dry-point etching to carve into the paper, removing lines or chunks of paint, ink, and paper. This process can reveal new paths of growth through negative space, or it can lead to scarring of the surface of the paper beyond the ability to sustain new forms. The resulting form is both organic and arbitrary, sometimes carefully planned to fit into a certain space, sometimes spontaneously erupting out of the necessity of existing forms.
